Your oral health needs to be a priority, and it is actually more important than you think. Many studies have proven a link between unhealthy gums and severe health concerns. Gum disease is a progressive condition that starts as gingivitis and can progress into irreversible periodontal disease. Because the gum tissues are living features connected to the body’s blood supply, an infection inside the mouth can easily pass through the bloodstream to other vital organs. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, miscarriage, and low-weight births, so it is crucial to take gum health seriously.
The steps for having healthy gums are quite easy to implement:
- Floss daily. Dental floss is the most underutilized tool for cleaning your teeth. Floss is designed to scrape damaging plaque away from the gum line and from between the teeth. Plaque is laden with bacteria that cause gum inflammation, infection, cavities, and tooth decay.
- Brush twice a day. You should brush at least twice a day using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brushing loosens plaque and food particles from the teeth, stimulates your gums, and keeps your breath fresh.
- Opt for water. Water is essential for life, yet it is often passed over for sodas, tea, or coffee. If you drink any beverages that contain sugar, you are essentially bathing your teeth in harmful sugar with every sip. Water is the healthiest option for your smile and your overall health.
- Use mouthwash. If you struggle with red, swollen, or irritated gums, you can use an ADA-approved mouthwash daily. Mouthwash should never take the place of flossing or brushing, but it can help to rinse away harmful bacteria from the mouth.
- Visit the dentist twice a year. Your dental appointments are crucial for keeping your gums healthy. A thorough cleaning and exam twice a year will set you up for oral health success.
- Stop tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption. Bad habits such as smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco, and drinking a lot of alcohol can ruin your smile. Now is the time to choose to reduce your risk of gum disease and other health concerns by breaking bad habits.
